Most 2001 Census data is now free on the ABS web site, and the 2006 Census data will be, too. Our tools load these numbers and turn them into knowledge.
The Public Practice is a licensed reseller of ABS data. This allows us to load your area's ABS data into the Community Planning tools you order, so their ready to use.
We can provide you with ABS data for use other analysis, if you can't get what you want from the ABS (more on ABS ...).
Our interactive Tools allow you to load and analyse ABS data sets (called profiles), which you can download from the ABS AusStats web site. Our Portraits and Analyst are produced by us and come with your data loaded.
We focus on two data products - the Census Data File and 20-year Projections - but also have 1996 and 2001 Census data for sale. Order any data using our Order Form; we will then call you.
Census Data File
The Census Data File is a large Excel™ spreadsheet that contains all the basic Census data for up to 23 places in your area, each in its own column. Its primary purpose is to assemble data needed for the Community Analyst and the Community Projector.
The Census Data File makes it easy to look up any number you need from the Censuses. It’s a basic tool where all your Census data is in one location. It is a large Excel file, about 10-20 Mb, but opens easily on modern computers.
All the data is labelled in the first three columns - the first column gives the main topic (eg industries), the second gives the categories (eg retail, manufacturing, mining), and the third gives the type (eg gender). These columns have Autofilters so you can easily find data on a topic by setting each of the first three columns to the categories desired.
The first 20 data columns contain data for the places you want to compare; the next 3 columns contain the data for three comparative areas – usually the Council, region and state. The remaining columns hold data for any smaller areas (eg Census Collector Districts, CCDs) needed to create your localities.
A Council Census Data File contains all the Census Collector's Districts (CCDs) in the Local Government Area, added into suburbs or districts of your choice.
The Census Data File 2006 will let you export comma-delimited files of CCD codes and data, for loading into your mapping program or GIS.
- The Basic Census Data File contains data for the last two Censuses (currently 1996 and 2001), and is used in the Community Analyst and the Community Projector. It costs $950 bought separately.
- The Advanced Census Data File contains data for the 1991, 1996 and 2001 Censuses, and can be used to construct time-series data for the Community Explorer. The Advanced Census Data File costs $1,900.
Areas with more than 200 Census Collector's Districts cost 50% more.
20-year Projections
We can provide 20-year population projections for any ABS area from SLA to SD and State, for the period 2002-2022. These are provided as an Excel spreadsheet or PDF. See a sample.
Our interactive tool, the PopuLater loads and analyses this data for just $300. It comes with your place's data loaded, compared with Australia. You can buy projections for extra places for $79 each, emailed promptly.
Basic Community Profiles
We have a full set of the Basic Community Profiles from the 2001 and 1996 Census for all areas of Australia from the smallest, the Census Collector’s District (CCD) of about 200 dwellings, to the national level. We access to 1991 and 1986 data as needed from the ABS or other licensed distributors.
Each Basic Community Profile (BCP) is provided as either a column of data or as a set of standard ABS tables, with data covering on population, employment, culture, housing etc – about 4,000 to 5,000 numbers for each place.
We provide BCPs for $5 for each area, or negotiable for large data sets (eg whole councils).
