| How Singleton gets to work | ||||||||||||||||
| Some 9,250 of Singleton's people were in the workforce in 2001. Of these, 81% travelled to work (73% of women and 85% of men) while 6% worked at home and 18% stayed at home (unemployed or off work). The proportion working at home was much higher than across NSW; the rate amongst women was virtually the same as that of men. | ||||||||||||||||
| Around 1,045 people in the workforce did not attend work on Census day, representing 11% of the workforce (compared with 11% for NSW). About 321 people were unemployed, while the others may have been employed only part-time or having a day off. | ||||||||||||||||
| Of those travelling to work, the most common means were by car as driver (75% of the trips) and by car as passenger (10%). Compared with NSW, there were much larger proportions travelling by car as passenger and much smaller proportions travelling by train. | ||||||||||||||||
| Since 1996, the number travelling to work in Singleton increased by 2% while their overall travel patterns changed little. The number travelling by car increased by 3% with the number of drivers up by 6%. The number travelling by public transport (train, bus, ferry etc) fell by 49%, with travel by train up by 17%, albeit from small numbers. | ||||||||||||||||

| There were some 12,700 registered motor vehicles owned or used by Singleton's people and parked at or near their homes on Census night 2001. This was an average of 1.7 vehicles per household or 0.80 vehicles for every person aged 18+. Vehicle ownership was greater than NSW, which had 1.5 vehicles per household or 0.67 vehicles for every adult. | ||||||||||||||||
