The households in Singleton
In 2001, Singleton had some 6,640 households (up 216 since 1996), of which a majority (78%) were family households, with about 54 households having more than one family. The average family household had 3.3 people. There were also 163 group households (of unrelated people), averaging 2.1 people each. Singleton's overall average household size, including its 1,270 single-person households, was 2.83 persons, much larger than NSW's average of 2.65 persons.

Household arrangements in Singleton
Most commonly, people live as a part of couple; 47% of people lived this way in Singleton in 2001 (similar to NSW's 45%). About 11% of couples were not married, similar to NSW's rate of 11%. As well, there were 686 lone parents, constituting 3.6% of the population (4.3% for NSW), with four-fifths of them being women.
Living with these couples and single-parents were some 7,130 children and young people, most commonly a child under 15 years. They represented 38% of the people compared with 36% of NSW.
The other people in Singleton lived either alone (1,270 people or 6%) or in group households (342 or 1%). Altogether, 82% of Singleton's people lived in families, with some 16,600 people in some 5,270 families of an average size of 3.1 people. This was similar to NSW's average family size, 3.0 people.
Singleton had some 2,800 couples with children, with 62% having all their children aged under 15. They constituted 54% of all families and had 55% of Singleton's people. Another 32% of families were couples without children, home to 17% of the population. In addition, there were 686 single-parent families (with 9% of the population) and 51 families of other types.
Between 1996 and 2001, the average family size in Singleton decreased by 6% while across NSW it decreased by 7%. The average size of couple families with children decreased by 4% from 4.12 to 3.97 persons, while the average size of single-parent families decreased by 2% from 2.78 to 2.72 persons.

Marital status in Singleton
Overall in Singleton, 56% of adults (aged 15+) were married in 2001, 9% were separated or divorced, 5% were widowed, and 29% had never been married. By comparison with NSW, Singleton had a lot more married people (by 4.4 percentage points), fewer separated or divorced people (by 1.1 points), fewer people widowed (by 1.5 points), and a lot fewer people who had never married (by 1.8 points).
Only 29% of younger people (15–34 years old) were married in 2001. This was virtually the same as NSW's rate of 26%. This rate had noticeably fallen from 37% in 1996, while the proportion of younger people who had never married went from 59% to 66%.
Among older people aged 75+, the marital status of men and women becomes quite divergent due to the earlier death of many men, leaving many widows. In Singleton, 65% of these older women but 22% of the men were widowed, while conversely 66% of the men but only 26% of the women were still married.
